Did you know that on March 2nd 2016 it’s Read Across America Day? This year I think it would a lot of fun to get together with a group of friends to celebrate this special day which also happens to be Dr. Seuss’s birthday! I’m sharing with you some of my favorite Read Across America Playdate Ideas to get you started.

Your child’s school most likely has something special planned for the day as well. My tip… ask if you can join the fun or come in and volunteer to read a Dr. Seuss book at the beginning or end of the day.

Did you know that each year 45 Million people participate in Read Across America…Will you be celebrating at home or school this year too?  Take the pledge.

SHARE your Read Across America Day photos with us on facebook at The Educators’ Spin On It facebook page on March 2nd!

Love this quote from the NEA video…

“With Read Across America you’re

never to old,

to wacky,

to wild,

to pick up a book

and read with a child.”

Activities for Read Across America Playdate

To get your playdate started you might want to think about getting a special Hat inspired by The Cat in the Hat or even a round up a few Dr. Seuss inspired characters.  This year’s featured book is What Pet Should I Get?.  Here’s a guide for activities from NEA.org. I always keep my eye out at the Dollar Spot at Target, they always seem to have stickers, journals and little treasures there to add to the playdate fun.  I’ve even sent in Dr. Seuss pencils to school with my daughter to celebrate the special day in class.

Plan a Seuss Inspired Snack

Plan a Dr. Seuss Inspired Snack for the kids.  When meeting up after school it’s always a good idea to set up snack time at the beginning so kids are happy and fed to create more quality time together.  A yogurt parfait that’s layered with strawberries can be super simple but inspire a little Cat in the Hat fun.

Read Dr. Seuss Books

There’s something super silly about reading Dr. Seuss books to a group or children or even to your very own child.  Set up a book station filled with books to read.  Even having the kids take turns reading it might be a fun way to get them involved in the silliness.   What Pet Should I Get, The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and  Home, The Places You’ll Go, The Lorax, One Fish, two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish are a few are our favorites. This Dr. Seuss’s Beginner Book Collection is a good place to start for $20.

Creative Ideas for Dr. Seuss Books

Set up a few stations around your home for kids to create a project inspired by Dr. Seuss

  • Make a Cat in the Hat inspired Hat for each kid to wear.
  • Paint a water scene that includes fish.
  • Patterning can be fun with Thing 2 and thing One…. get creative.
  • Create your own Cat in the Hat Sensory Bottle Craft

Play Ideas for Dr. Seuss Books

Especially if you’re getting together in the afternoon create moments for play inspired by the Dr. Seuss theme.

  • Jump on rhyming words on the floor
  • Have a letter toss with the hat
  • Grab Letters or sight words from the Fish bowl
  • Pin the Hat on the Cat  can always be a fun game with kids. Use your Cat In The Hat Bulletin Board Set
